Ramp vs Amex, Brex vs Amex and Amex vs Ramp costs for a 10-person US team

Ramp vs Amex comes down to one trade. Ramp and Brex give you the expense software for $0 per user as long as your team spends on their cards, while American Express charges an annual card fee ($375 for Business Gold, $895 for Business Platinum) and leaves most of the expense workflow to you or to a separate tool. If rewards on travel matter most, Amex usually wins. If receipts, approvals and coding are the pain, Ramp or Brex usually wins, unless you want to keep Amex and add expense software on top.

The honest short answer for a ten-person US company goes like this. Ramp Free and Brex Essentials cost $0 a year in software, but both are charge cards that require you to move card spend to them, and Ramp asks for at least $25,000 in a US business bank account. Amex Business Platinum costs $895 a year for the Basic Card, plus $400 a year for each Employee Business Platinum Card or $0 for each Employee Business Expense Card, according to the card page on americanexpress.com. Keeping Amex and adding Expenditure for receipts, coding and approvals costs $2,400 a year on Starter or $4,200 on Growth for ten seats, on top of the card fee.

Rewards are where Amex earns its fee. Business Gold earns 4X Membership Rewards points on your top two eligible spending categories each month, on the first $150,000 of combined purchases a year and 1X after that. Business Platinum earns 5X on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com. Neither card charges foreign transaction fees. Ramp advertises uncapped cashback on every transaction and says it charges no foreign transaction fee, though its help center notes that card purchases in another currency can carry a conversion markup of up to 3%. Brex states an FX rate markup of up to 3% on card spend that needs converting.

Controls are where Ramp and Brex earn their place. Both issue unlimited virtual and physical cards, set limits by employee, merchant or category, block out-of-policy purchases at the moment of authorization and chase receipts by text or app. Ramp Free includes receipt matching, approval rules and QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations. Brex Premium at $12 per user a month adds more policy and travel controls. Amex gives you employee cards with spending limits and an online account to review charges after they post. Small business Card Members get Connect to QuickBooks at no extra cost, and companies on the Corporate CashBack Program get the Amex Expense app.

Underwriting decides a lot of these choices before any feature does. Ramp underwrites the company on its cash and revenue, with no personal credit check and no personal guarantee. Brex, now a Capital One company, also issues its corporate card without a personal guarantee. Amex small business cards are opened by a named Basic Card Member, and American Express explains that business credit cards usually carry a personal guarantee, which puts the owner on the hook if the business cannot pay.

There is a third setup that neither Ramp nor Brex pitches: keep your Amex cards, points and credit relationship, and add software that does the expense work. That is what Expenditure does. You import the Amex statement as a CSV, OFX or QFX file, we match each line to its receipt, read the receipt at line level, code it to your chart of accounts, check it against your policy, route it for approval on Growth and export a clean file for QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite. Duplicate receipts are flagged before they reach the books. We never move or hold your money, we are bank-grade secure and we never sell or train on your financial data. This is software and insight, not financial, tax or accounting advice.

Why it works

What to settle before you move off Amex

Count the rewards you would give up

If most spend is flights and hotels, Business Platinum points can be worth more than a free software plan. Price that before you switch.

Check you qualify first

Ramp wants $25,000 in a US business bank account and a corporation, LLC or LP. Brex underwrites on company financials. Sole proprietors often land back on Amex.

Separate the card from the paperwork

The expense work (receipts, coding, approvals) can move without the card moving. Expenditure runs it on the Amex cards you already have.

What it handles

A receipt in, a categorized line out, the waste flagged

Expenditure reads each receipt, categorizes it, checks it against your policy and rolls it into real-time spend, then surfaces the duplicate subscriptions and savings you are leaking.

  • Imports your Amex statement as CSV, OFX or QFX and matches each line to its receipt
  • Reads receipts at line level and codes each one to your chart of accounts
  • Checks every expense against your policy and routes it for approval on Growth
  • Flags duplicate receipts before they reach QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite
  • Keeps your Amex points, card terms and bank exactly as they are

Why Expenditure

Receipts read, spend categorized, waste flagged

Not manual coding, not a stale spreadsheet. Expenditure reads each receipt, checks your policy, shows real-time spend, and flags the savings, all on the cards and banks you already have.

Read and categorized

Snap, forward or drop a receipt. The AI reads the vendor, amount, tax and line items, categorizes it and matches the card, in seconds.

Waste flagged

Duplicate and overlapping subscriptions, unused tools, price creep and out-of-policy spend, surfaced in real time with the potential saving.

Secure and in your control

Bank-grade security, we never move or hold your money, and we never train on your data. Insights, not advice, your finance team decides.

Good questions

Questions about Ramp vs Amex

Ramp is better if your pain is expense work and you qualify: it includes cards, receipt matching, approvals and QuickBooks or Xero sync for $0 per user. Amex is better if travel rewards drive the decision, because Business Platinum earns 5X on flights and prepaid hotels via amextravel.com and Business Gold earns 4X on your top two categories, up to $150,000 a year.
Brex is better for a funded company that wants policy enforced at the moment of purchase, unlimited virtual cards and no personal guarantee, with software from $0 per user. Amex is better for owners who value its rewards, acceptance and no foreign transaction fees on Gold and Platinum, since Brex applies an FX rate markup of up to 3% on converted card spend.
Ramp is a spend platform that issues its own charge card and gives away the expense software, earning its money on card interchange. Amex is a card issuer that charges an annual fee for rewards and benefits, $375 for Business Gold and $895 for Business Platinum, and offers lighter expense tools. Ramp underwrites the company; Amex small business cards have a named Basic Card Member.
No. Ramp does not run a personal credit check or ask for a personal guarantee. It underwrites the business on its cash and revenue, and its help center asks for a US corporation, LLC or LP with an EIN and at least $25,000 in a US business bank account. Sole proprietors and very new companies usually do not qualify.
The American Express Business Platinum Card has an $895 annual fee. Each Employee Business Platinum Card costs $400 a year, and each Employee Business Expense Card costs $0, according to the card page on americanexpress.com. For a ten-person team, that ranges from $895 a year with Expense Cards to $4,495 with nine Employee Platinum Cards.
The Ramp Free plan costs $0 per user per month with no platform fee, and includes cards, receipt matching, approvals, bill pay and QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations. Ramp earns interchange when your team spends on the Ramp card, so the real price is moving your card program to Ramp. Ramp Plus costs $15 per user a month plus a platform fee.
On software alone, Ramp Free and Brex Essentials are cheapest at $0. Amex Business Gold costs $375 a year and Business Platinum $895 a year before employee card fees. Keeping Amex and adding Expenditure for receipts, coding and approvals costs the card fee plus $2,400 a year on Starter or $4,200 on Growth for ten seats.
Not on the Business Gold or Business Platinum cards. American Express states that both cards have no foreign transaction fees on purchases made outside the United States. Ramp says it charges no foreign transaction fee but that converted purchases can carry a markup of up to 3%, and Brex applies an FX rate markup of up to 3%.
Yes. Expenditure works on the Amex, Visa and Mastercard cards you already have. You import the Amex statement as CSV, OFX or QFX, it matches each line to a receipt, codes it to your chart of accounts, checks your policy, routes approvals on Growth and exports files for QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite. Your points and card terms do not change.
Partly. Small business Card Members can use Connect to QuickBooks, which sends card transactions and receipt photos to QuickBooks Online, and companies on the Corporate CashBack Program get the Amex Expense app. Teams that need employee submissions, approvals and GL coding across several Amex cards usually add a separate expense tool.
Brex is a Capital One company. The Brex website states that Brex LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital One, N.A. Its pricing is unchanged on brex.com: Essentials at $0 per user a month and Premium at $12 per user a month, with Enterprise tiers priced on request.
