Brex pricing 2026: plans, cost per user, Brex Premium fees and whether Brex is really free
Brex pricing starts at $0 per user per month on Essentials and $12 per user per month on Premium. Enterprise is custom. So is Smart Card, a fourth tier for procurement that almost no comparison table lists. Those figures were read directly from brex.com/pricing on August 13, 2026, along with Brex's own one line summary at the bottom of the page: some Brex products have associated fees, plans start at $0 per user, per month, and more advanced features are available for $12 per user, per month.

Receipts in, categorized spend out
Expenditure reads the vendor, amount, date and tax, categorizes the expense, checks it against your policy, and rolls it into a real-time picture of every dollar, then flags the waste.

Start with the correction that matters most this year, because the entire market has it backwards. Brex charges nothing to move money. Brex's own support documentation states that it does not charge any transaction fees when sending domestic wires, international wires, ACHs or checks via your Brex business account. Meanwhile Ramp began metering Bill Pay on June 1, 2026 at 59 cents per standard ACH and $1.99 per mailed check, and BILL charges the same 59 cents and $1.99 regardless of plan. For years the shorthand was that Ramp is the free one. On per payment fees, as of today, Brex is the only one of the three that charges zero, and a company paying 300 bills a month is looking at a real difference rather than a rounding error.
That does not make Brex free, and the fee Brex does charge is the one nobody puts in a comparison table. Brex applies an FX rate markup of up to 3 percent on any transaction that has to be converted into another currency. If a meaningful slice of your spend is in euros, pounds or Canadian dollars, that 3 percent will dwarf every per transaction fee argument on this page. On a $400,000 annual international card spend, up to 3 percent is up to $12,000, which is more than the Premium seat cost for a 60 person company. Domestic card transactions carry no additional fee by default, and third party or recipient banks can still charge their own fees on wires regardless of what Brex does.
The second correction is about who Brex now is. Brex is not an independent fintech anymore, and a surprising number of pricing guides still say the Capital One deal is expected to close. It closed. Capital One announced the acquisition on January 22, 2026 and completed it on April 7, 2026 at $5.15 billion, roughly $2.6 billion in cash plus 10.6 million Capital One shares with a fair value near $1.9 billion. Brex's own site now carries the sentence in its footer: Brex LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital One, N.A. Brex Treasury LLC and Brex Payments LLC, a licensed money transmitter under NMLS 2035354, are both described as Capital One companies. Pricing has not moved since the close, which is genuinely reassuring, but it is worth asking what is committed in writing at your renewal.
Worth knowing before you model seats: Essentials is unusually complete for a free tier. It includes global card acceptance and one local card program, AI powered custom rules, up to two entities with one global entity, accounting integrations, local currency wires, real time reporting, Brex API access, bill pay and reimbursements, and travel booking is free on Essentials specifically. Premium at $12 is what you buy when policy gets complicated: multiple customizable expense policies with category rules and role based exceptions, dynamic expense review chains, AI compliance audit detection, advanced approvals, multi entity across the US and internationally, customizable ERP and HRIS integrations, VAT documentation, group travel rules and live budgets. Brex publishes no annual billing discount, so unlike Ramp there is no 20 percent lever to pull by paying up front.
One structural note that changes how you read every Brex quote. The card is issued by partner banks rather than by Brex, and the list has grown: the Brex Mastercard Corporate Credit Card is issued by Emigrant Bank, Fifth Third Bank N.A. or Airwallex Netherlands B.V., and the Brex Commercial Card is issued by Sutton Bank on the Visa network with no ATM access. The Brex business account consists of Checking, provided by Column N.A., plus Treasury and Vault. All of it is subject to approval and underwriting. The $0 tier is not charity, it is a card program: Brex earns interchange on your spend and yield on your balances, which is a perfectly honest business model as long as you price it as one.
Expenditure sells the software and leaves your banking alone. Starter is $12 per user per month, Growth is $24 and Scale is $39, billed annually in USD and published without a quote. It runs on the Visa and Mastercard cards and the bank accounts you already have, reads every receipt and codes it to the right GL account from your own chart of accounts, checks each transaction against your expense policy as it lands, and flags duplicate subscriptions, unused seats and price creep before renewal. There is no card application, no credit decision, and it never moves or holds your money, so no part of your price depends on where your cash sits or what you spend on the card.
Be equally clear about what Expenditure does not do, because a comparison only helps if it is honest. It does not issue corporate cards, extend credit, pay vendor bills or book travel. Brex does all four, it does them well, and if you want a card program, a payment rail and expense software from one vendor then Brex is a better fit than we are. Brex is also the cheaper answer on paper for a small team, because Essentials is $0 and we are not. Expenditure earns its place when the cards and payments are already handled and what still costs your team its month end close is receipt coding, policy enforcement and finding the spend nobody is watching.
To work out what Brex will actually cost you, price it in three parts rather than multiplying a seat rate. Count seats at $0 or $12 and decide honestly whether you need Premium, since policy complexity rather than headcount is what pushes teams up. Then estimate your foreign currency spend and multiply by up to 3 percent, because that is the only published Brex fee that scales with volume. Finally, weigh what you are accepting in exchange for the $0: a credit application, a card program you are expected to actually use, and operating cash sitting inside a Capital One subsidiary. The table below lists every published figure so you can run that math without guessing.

| Line item | What Brex publishes | What it does to your monthly bill |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials plan | $0 per user per month | Global card acceptance and 1 local card program, AI powered custom rules, up to two entities, accounting integrations, bill pay, reimbursements, API access |
| Premium plan | $12 per user per month | Adds multiple customizable expense policies, dynamic review chains, AI compliance audit detection, multi entity US and international, ERP and HRIS integrations, live budgets |
| Enterprise plan | Custom pricing | Quoted only. Adds unlimited US or global entities, local card issuance, collections, a named account manager and customizable implementation services |
| Smart Card | Custom pricing | A fourth tier for procurement that most comparison tables omit entirely. Local currency cards in 50+ countries, merchant card controls, custom approvals |
| Annual billing discount | None published | Unlike Ramp, which publishes 20 percent off annual, Brex advertises no prepayment discount on its pricing page |
| Domestic ACH on bill pay | No transaction fee | Brex states it does not charge transaction fees on ACH sent from a Brex business account. Ramp charges $0.59 for the same payment since June 1, 2026 |
| Mailed check | No transaction fee | Ramp and BILL both charge $1.99. At 200 checks a month that gap is $398 |
| Domestic wire transfer | No transaction fee | Ramp charges $15 unless funded from a Ramp Checking Account. Third party and recipient banks may still charge their own fees |
| International wire | No transaction fee from Brex | Ramp charges $20 for an international SWIFT USD payment. Recipient banks can still charge the recipient |
| FX rate markup | Up to 3 percent | The one Brex fee that scales with spend, and the one almost no comparison lists. On $400,000 of foreign currency spend that is up to $12,000 a year |
| Domestic card transactions | No additional fees by default | Brex's own wording. The card economics run on interchange rather than on charging you per swipe |
| Travel booking | Free on Essentials | Brex calls this out specifically on the Essentials tier. Group travel and advanced travel rules sit on Premium |
| Card issuer | Emigrant Bank, Fifth Third Bank N.A. or Airwallex Netherlands B.V. | The Mastercard corporate credit card. Subject to approval and underwriting, so the $0 tier still involves a credit decision |
| Commercial card issuer | Sutton Bank, Visa network | Brex publishes that this card has no ATM access |
| Business account | Checking from Column N.A., plus Treasury and Vault | Treasury funds are not FDIC insured. Vault funds are eligible for FDIC insurance once they arrive at program banks |
| Ownership | Wholly owned subsidiary of Capital One, N.A. | Acquisition completed April 7, 2026 at $5.15 billion. Any guide still saying the deal is expected to close is out of date |
Plan figures read from brex.com/pricing and fee figures from Brex's published support documentation, both on August 13, 2026. Pricing changes, so recheck before you sign. If a comparison lists only three Brex tiers, claims Brex charges per ACH or check, omits the FX markup, or describes Brex as an independent company or the Capital One deal as pending, it predates the current pricing and ownership and its math will be wrong in both directions.
Why it works
What you get when the software is not attached to a card program
A published price with nothing behind it
Expenditure publishes Starter at $12, Growth at $24 and Scale at $39 per user per month. There is no credit application, no interchange to earn back, and no currency markup, so the number on the pricing page is the number on the invoice.
No card program to adopt
A $0 tier in this market is funded by a card program and an underwriting decision. Expenditure is software you buy outright, so there is nothing to apply for, nothing to be declined for, and no expectation that you move spend onto our rails.
Your cash and your FX stay yours
Expenditure never moves or holds your money and never converts a currency on your behalf, so no part of what you pay depends on where your operating cash sits or what markup someone takes on a euro transaction.
What it handles
A receipt in, a categorized line out, the waste flagged
Expenditure reads each receipt, categorizes it, checks it against your policy and rolls it into real-time spend, then surfaces the duplicate subscriptions and savings you are leaking.

- Checks each transaction against your expense policy as it lands
- Gives finance a live view of spend across cards, vendors and subscriptions
- Flags duplicate subscriptions, unused seats and price creep before renewal
