Compare · Zoho Expense

A Zoho Expense alternative that does not meter your receipt scans

Zoho Expense is cheap, and it is cheap in a good way. Zoho lists it at 3 dollars per user per month billed annually on Standard and 5 dollars on Premium, with a free tier for up to three users. It is deeply configurable, it handles multi-currency and multi-entity setups well, and if you already live in Zoho Books or Zoho One it is the obvious choice. We are not going to pretend we beat that on price, because we do not.

Receipts in, categorized spend out

Expenditure reads the vendor, amount, date and tax, categorizes the expense, checks it against your policy, and rolls it into a real-time picture of every dollar, then flags the waste.

The catch is what happens when you actually use it at volume. Zoho meters receipt autoscans: the Standard plan includes 20 autoscans per user per month, and Zoho's own documentation states that autoscanning fails once you exceed the plan limit, so you wait and re-upload the next day. For a team that processes receipts in any real quantity, the AI feature you bought is rationed. The most common complaint in Zoho Expense reviews is OCR quality on faded or crumpled receipts, and the second is how long the initial policy and approval setup takes.

Expenditure takes the opposite position. Receipt reading is the product, not a metered add-on, so every receipt is read, categorized to the right GL account and policy-checked without a monthly quota to ration. It also does something Zoho does not: it watches spend across cards, vendors and subscriptions and proactively flags duplicate tools and price creep. It runs on the cards and banks you already have, and it never moves or holds your money.

Zoho Expense wins on price and configurability, especially inside the Zoho ecosystem. Expenditure wins for receipt-heavy teams that need unmetered AI reading, accurate categorization and proactive waste detection rather than the lowest seat price.

Side by side

Zoho Expense vs Expenditure, honestly

A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.

What matters Expenditure Zoho Expense
Receipt AI limits Every receipt is read, with no monthly autoscan quota to ration Autoscans are metered: 20 per user per month on Standard, and Zoho documents that autoscanning fails once the plan limit is exceeded
Pricing Transparent per-seat pricing, and honestly higher than Zoho Cheaper: $3 per user per month on Standard billed annually, $5 on Premium, free for up to 3 users (zoho.com/us/expense/pricing, July 2026)
Duplicate subscription and waste detection Proactively flags duplicate tools, unused seats and price creep Not offered
Receipt OCR accuracy Reads vendor, amount, date, tax and line items, and flags low-confidence scans for review rather than guessing Capable, though users commonly report misreads on faded, crumpled or handwritten receipts
Setup effort Policy rules set once, in plain terms Very configurable, but reviewers commonly report the initial policy and approval setup is time-consuming
Multi-currency and multi-entity Built for US businesses and US GL structures A genuine strength: strong multi-currency, multi-entity and per diem support
Works with your existing cards Runs on the Visa and Mastercard cards and banks you already have Corporate card management with real-time Visa and Mastercard feeds on Standard and above

Why teams pick Expenditure

Software-first spend management that works with your existing cards

No scan quota

Receipt reading is the product. There is no monthly autoscan allowance to run out of halfway through the month.

Waste, not just reports

Duplicate subscriptions, unused seats and price creep get flagged automatically, which a pure expense-report tool does not do.

Honest about the trade

Zoho is cheaper. If seat price is the deciding factor and your receipt volume is low, buy Zoho. We are built for teams where the receipts pile up.

Good questions

Zoho Expense vs Expenditure, answered

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Zoho Expense lists Standard at $3 per user per month billed annually and has a free tier for up to three users, which is very hard to beat. Expenditure is worth more only if unmetered receipt AI, categorization accuracy and waste detection save you more than the price difference.
Zoho meters receipt autoscans by plan. The Standard plan includes 20 autoscans per user per month, and Zoho documentation states that autoscanning fails when uploads exceed the plan limit, so you re-upload later. Limits can change, so check Zoho pricing directly. Expenditure does not meter receipt reading.
Price, first of all, plus depth of configuration, multi-currency and multi-entity support, GSA per diem handling, and tight integration if you already run Zoho Books or Zoho One. Those are real advantages and for many teams they are the deciding ones.
Teams that hit the autoscan ceiling, teams losing time to OCR misreads and manual re-coding, and teams that want duplicate subscriptions and price creep surfaced automatically rather than hunted for. If none of those hurt today, staying on Zoho is a reasonable call.
