A Brex alternative that works with the cards you already have

Brex is a capable corporate-card and spend platform, popular with startups and scaling enterprises. It pairs cards with expense management, approvals and reporting, and many teams value the integrated experience and the ecosystem around it. The point buyers raise when weighing Brex alternatives is similar to other card-led platforms: realizing the full benefit usually means adopting Brex cards and shifting parts of your banking and credit setup.

One fact worth knowing before you compare, because most published Brex comparisons predate it: Brex is no longer an independent fintech. Capital One announced the acquisition on January 22, 2026 and completed it on April 7, 2026, at a value of $5.15 billion made up of roughly $2.6 billion in cash and 10.6 million Capital One shares with a fair value near $1.9 billion, per Capital One's own newsroom and its SEC filings. Brex's own site now says it plainly in the footer: Brex LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital One, N.A. Brex still publishes Essentials free and Premium at $12 per user per month as of August 13, 2026, unchanged since the close, and existing accounts continue to work. That is not a reason to leave. It is a reason to ask, at your next renewal, what is committed in writing about your credit limit, your term and your international coverage now that the card program sits inside a national bank.

Two more things are worth putting on the table before you shortlist alternatives, because they cut in opposite directions and most comparisons carry neither. In Brex's favor: Brex charges no transaction fee on ACHs, checks, or domestic and international wires sent from a Brex business account, which as of this year makes it cheaper per payment than Ramp, which began metering Bill Pay on June 1, 2026, and than BILL, which charges per transaction regardless of plan. Against it: Brex applies an FX rate markup of up to 3 percent on any transaction converted into another currency, and on heavily international spend that single line will outweigh every seat price in this category. Both figures come from Brex's own published documentation.

Expenditure is software-first and designed to sit on top of the cards and banks you already run. It reads receipts, categorizes to the right GL account, enforces policy, gives a real-time view of every dollar across cards, vendors and subscriptions, and proactively flags duplicate tools, unused seats and price creep. You get the modern AI categorization, real-time visibility and proactive savings without issuing new cards, on transparent per-seat pricing.

To be straight about the trade: Expenditure issues no cards and underwrites no credit. If you want a corporate card with rewards, or limits sized against your runway, or cards issued across many countries, you want a card issuer, and Brex is a good one. This is the better answer only when what you actually wanted was the software, and the card switch is a cost you were paying for no reason.

Before you compare anything else, get the cost right. Our breakdown of Brex pricing, plan by plan lists all four published tiers, the FX markup of up to 3 percent that most comparisons leave out, and the fact that Brex charges no transaction fee on ACHs, checks or wires, read from Brex's own pages on August 13, 2026.

Brex is a strong card-plus-spend platform for startups and enterprises. Expenditure is the software-first option that delivers the same AI categorization, real-time visibility and savings on the Visa and Mastercard cards you already have.

Good questions

Brex vs Expenditure, answered

If you want Brex-style AI expense management, real-time visibility and savings insight without adopting a new corporate card, yes. Expenditure is software-first and works on the cards and banks you already have, with transparent per-seat pricing.
Yes. Expenditure runs on top of your existing Visa and Mastercard cards and accounts, so nothing about your banking changes. We never move or hold your money, and we never sell or train on your financial data.
Yes. Capital One announced the acquisition on January 22, 2026 and completed it on April 7, 2026. The deal was valued at $5.15 billion, comprising approximately $2.6 billion in cash and 10.6 million Capital One shares with a fair value near $1.9 billion. Brex now operates as part of Capital One rather than as an independent fintech.
Brex publishes Essentials free at $0 per user per month and Premium at $12 per user per month, with Enterprise and Smart Card quoted custom. Those figures were read from the Brex pricing page on August 1, 2026. The free tier is funded by interchange on Brex card spend, so the practical price is running your company spend on their card.
Not on its own. Switching card rails means reissuing cards, updating the card on file at every vendor, a reconciliation gap while charges land on two rails, and usually a fresh credit application. Treat the ownership change as a reason to re-examine your terms at renewal, and switch only if something concrete changes.
It depends which half of Brex you actually need. If you need the corporate card and credit, Ramp is the closest like-for-like and publishes a free tier plus Plus at $15 per user per month. If you need the expense software without moving card spend, a software-first platform like Expenditure runs on the cards and banks you already have.
